Varna for students and young people: study, budget, fun and friends
Varna for students: four universities, the sea, low living costs and free bus cards for full-time students, but quiet winters and few student jobs.
Varna suits students and young people who want a real city by the sea at a lower cost than Western Europe: it has four universities, including a Medical University with a large international cohort, a walkable centre, and free city bus cards for full-time students. The honest downsides are a quiet winter, a language barrier outside the centre and few part-time jobs for people who don’t speak Bulgarian.
Why do young people choose Varna?
The study options are covered in our guide to the universities in Varna: medicine, engineering, economics, architecture and the arts. Beyond the lecture halls, the sea does a lot of the work. From May to September, life moves to the beach, the Sea Garden and the seafront. The Varna region also has one of Bulgaria’s strongest job markets, with unemployment of 3.3% in 2023 against 5.3% nationally.
How much does a student need per month?
Numbeo’s October 2026 figures put living costs at about €713 a month for one person before rent, and a one-bedroom flat outside the centre at about €419. Students usually pay less by sharing a flat. Two things help a lot:
- Transport: Gradski Transport says travel cards for full-time students are free. Otherwise a 60-minute ticket costs €0.51 in the TTickets Varna app.
- Food: canteens, döner and bakeries keep lunch cheap; see our list of cheap eats in Varna.

Where do young people hang out?
In winter, people gather indoors: board-game clubs, the climbing wall, escape rooms, cafés and the events at the Festival and Congress Centre, whose programme brings film festivals, concerts and fan events all year round; for dates, see its programme or the Varna Now events calendar. In summer, people play beach volleyball, swim, rent SUPs and finish the day at the Kraybrezhna beach bars. Golden Sands opens its party strip from about mid-May; for the city’s bars, see our night out in Varna guide.
How do I make friends here?
Pick one activity and go every week. Board-game nights, the climbing club’s free course and band rehearsals at RockSchool give you the same faces again and again. International students should join ESN’s welcome week. For language exchange and other groups, see meeting people in Varna. For something meaningful, try volunteering in Varna.
Can I find part-time or seasonal work?
Summer jobs in bars, hotels and on the beach are the classic option, but they last only for the season and often expect some Bulgarian. Year-round, English-speaking roles are mostly in IT, international teams and remote work. Read our remote work and jobs in Varna guide, and check your residence and work rights first.
Is Varna safe at night?
Most visitors find the centre relaxed, but regional statistics show crime per head above the national average. Stick to lit, busy streets. Use a registered taxi and make sure the meter is on; Uber-style apps are not available. Keep an eye on your drinks and your phone in crowded summer clubs.
A simple plan for your first month
- Get your student card and ask about the free bus card.
- Join one indoor activity (games, climbing or music) and one outdoor one.
- Take a weekend trip by train: an Erasmus student reports that a university-arranged discount halved fares.

💬 What people say
Summarised from public reviews, forums and social posts — paraphrased themes, not individual quotes.

Earth Vagabonds ↗Many people under 30 speak English, especially in the centre and near the beach, but outside those areas English becomes hard to find.
Regional Profiles 2024 ↗Official regional data show more registered crimes against people and property per head than the national average, and a lower clearance rate, even though visitors generally describe Varna as safe.
