Most new students in Varna live in one of three places: a university dorm (about €33–€61 a month for regular students, €90–€150 for Erasmus+ rooms), a private student residence (€230–€520 per person) or a room in a shared flat (about €200–€300). Dorm places are limited and ranked, so apply the moment you are admitted and book a hostel or B&B for your first weeks as a backup.

How do I apply for a dorm as a new student?

  1. Apply as soon as you are admitted. MU Varna first-years apply online at webstudent.mu-varna.bg; in 2026 applications for the first ranking ran from 8 July to 3 August, and for later rounds after 14 August.
  2. Watch the ranking lists (“класиране”). TU Varna publishes its dorm rankings in rounds; the University of Economics ranks applicants by grades.
  3. Prepare your papers: enrolment certificate, ID or passport, two photos and a Bulgarian bank account certificate (TU asks for all of these).
  4. Pay the deposit by bank transfer (€120 at TU, €102.26 at the University of Economics).
  5. Register your address at your district office. TU names Rayon Primorski, 92 General Kolev St.
  6. Book a backup. Yo-Ho Hostel and B&Bs near the centre bridge the gap until you get a room.

Renting a flat as a student: what should I check?

Most students who don’t get a dorm place rent in Levski, which is walkable to the Technical, Medical and Economics universities. VFU students look in Chayka or Sv. Konstantin i Elena. Search imot.bg, alo.bg, olx.bg and bazar.bg, and filter for “без посредник” (no agency) if you want owner-direct listings.

  • Get a written contract with the rent in euro, the deposit (usually one to two months) and who pays which bills.
  • Make sure the owner will sign the declaration of address. You need it for residence registration: see the guides for non-EU students and EU citizens.
  • Take dated photos of the flat on move-in day.
  • Budget for health insurance on top of the rent.

Where do Medical University international students usually live?

First-years often start in Block 35, which is close to St. Marina hospital, or in Campus 90, a private residence on Tsar Osvoboditel Boulevard with studios and 24/7 reception. From the second year many move into shared flats in Levski or the centre with classmates. That is also an easy way to meet people in Varna.
