Student life in Varna: student councils, Erasmus and events

Student life in Varna runs through university student councils, Erasmus welcome days and a yearly calendar from the Rector's Cup to Student Day on 8 December.

Published:

Student life in Varna runs through the student councils of each university, which organise sports cups, food festivals, health campaigns and Erasmus welcome events. The year peaks with the Rector’s Cup in autumn, Student Day on 8 December and the Varna Universiade in April. Most of it is free, and you join simply by following your council and turning up.

This guide is about communities and the student calendar. For budget, nightlife and hobbies, read Varna for students and young people; for language exchange and sport, see meeting people in Varna.

Which student communities are active in Varna?

Varna’s universities each have an elected student council (студентски съвет), and in 2025–26 three of them are clearly active online:

  • Medical University of Varna: the largest international community. Its council runs the Rector’s Cup, an International Food Festival, the Click N’ Win gaming tournament and blood donation drives. The medical, dental and pharmacy student associations add health campaigns and the Teddy Bear Hospital.
  • University of Economics – Varna: talks, conferences, a Literary Club and a treasure hunt in spring 2026, plus Erasmus welcome days every semester.
  • Varna Free University: clubs for law, airsoft, music and creative work.

The Technical University has organised career forums with dozens of companies. For the full list of schools, see universities in Varna.

ESN Bulgaria agreed joint initiatives with UE Varna’s international office in 2021, but we could not confirm an active Varna section this year. Your international relations office is the most reliable contact for buddy and welcome programmes.

What does the student year look like?

When What happens
Late Sept – Oct Start of the academic year, Erasmus welcome days
Oct – Nov Rector’s Cup (MU Varna)
8 December Student Day: no classes at any university
Dec – Jan Winter exam session
February Spring semester, second wave of Erasmus arrivals

Dates change every year, so treat this as a rhythm, not a timetable, and check the councils’ Instagram pages.

How do I join a student community, step by step?

  1. Get your student card from your faculty, then ask Gradski Transport for the free bus card for full-time students.
  2. Follow your council: MU Varna on Instagram as studentcouncil.muvarna, UE Varna as uestudents, VFU as student_vfu.
  3. Go to the welcome event. Erasmus students at UE Varna get welcome days and a Bulgarian evening; at MU Varna, look out for the International Culinary Party.
  4. Volunteer once. Councils always need hands for events, blood drives and tournaments, and it is the fastest way in. More ideas: volunteering in Varna.
  5. Pick one club or team (theatre, music, airsoft or a Universiade sport) and keep going all semester.
  6. Run for a seat. Councils are elected; MU Varna held partial elections for its 2025–2027 council in October 2026.

Where do students hang out on a budget?

The Sea Garden and the beach cost nothing and are where everyone meets from May on. Campus events such as Talents’ Nights, food festivals and club meetings are usually free. In winter, board-game clubs and climbing walls are the cheap favourites; prices and addresses are in our students guide.

Which student discounts can I use?

Item Cost

What should I sort out before I arrive?

Communities are easier to enjoy once the basics are done. Book housing early: the university dormitories fill fast, and private residences such as Campus 90 opened in 2022. Our flat-hunting guide covers rentals. Then register your address: see EU citizens’ residence or non-EU residence, address and tax ID. Finally, check your health insurance.
