Hiking near Varna: forest trails to Aladzha and easy first hikes

Easy nature escapes from Varna: the Golden Sands to Aladzha Monastery trail and the Pobiti Kamani stone pillars, plus safety tips for first hikes.

Published:

When the city gets loud — outside or inside your head — Varna has real nature within a short ride. The two classic escapes are the forest trails from Golden Sands to the cliffside Aladzha Monastery, and the strange stone pillars of Pobiti Kamani west of the city. Both work well for a first hike with new friends.

Golden Sands to Aladzha Monastery

North of the city, the wooded hills behind the Golden Sands resort hide walking trails and the Aladzha Monastery, a medieval rock monastery carved on several levels into a limestone cliff. Hiking app Komoot lists a loop from Golden Sands to the monastery of about 9 km, rated moderate and passing through a protected area; a longer variant is about 11 km. User tips on Komoot suggest not drinking from forest springs and note loose dogs on the way. The monastery charges an entrance fee — check the current price on site.

Pobiti Kamani (the Stone Forest)

About 18–20 km west of Varna, near Beloslav, Pobiti Kamani (“the beaten-in stones”) is a field of natural stone pillars standing in sand. Most are 5 to 7 metres tall, some around 10 metres. The site is a protected natural landmark, and Bulgarian National Television has described it as the only recognised desert in Southeast Europe. Bring sun protection — there’s little shade.

First-hike checklist

  • Water, snacks, a hat and comfortable shoes.
  • A charged phone and an offline map.
  • Tell someone where you’re going and when you’ll be back.
  • Leave no trace — take your rubbish home.

Why nature helps

Walking in green spaces gives your attention a break from screens and to-do lists. Many people find that their best ideas about what they want from life show up on a trail, not at a desk.

A gentle reminder

Nature is good for the mind, but it isn’t therapy. If you’re struggling for a long time, please talk to a doctor or psychologist. In an emergency anywhere in Bulgaria, including on a trail, call 112. The Bulgarian Red Cross psychosocial support line is 0800 11 466.
